It's common knowledge that Ford is gearing up to phase out everything in its North American lineup that isn't a pickup truck, SUV, or crossover. General Motors, on the other hand, hasn't been as vocal about the fate of its sedans, though it appears less enthusiastic about abandoning such a significant segment of the auto industry. Rumors have circulated that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) might also be considering some cuts, a topic Motor Trend recently discussed with Steve Beahm, head of FCA's passenger car brands.
While one might view such a stance as risky in today's SUV-dominated market, Beahm seemed confident in FCA's car brands' future during his conversation with Motor Trend. However, he hinted that the future of some longstanding models may be uncertain beyond the current year. Specifically, Beahm suggested that the Dodge Journey, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Chrysler 300 might not continue beyond 2019.
"We haven’t announced the end of production," Beahm clarified regarding the Grand Caravan. "It’s going to be through the 2019 model year, like the Journey, at this point." Similarly, he mentioned that the Chrysler 300 would continue through 2019, without definitively stating that anything was canceled. Interestingly, Beahm indicated that FCA doesn't discuss plans beyond that, despite releasing its five-year plan about a month ago.
With the future of these three vehicles uncertain, does this mean FCA will follow Ford's lead? The Dodge Challenger and Charger appear to be safe for now. Beahm confirmed that both cars would remain on the same platform and are part of FCA's current strategy. Given the recent announcement of new Challenger models, it's likely these cars will stick around for the foreseeable future.
As for the rest of the lineup? Only time will tell what happens in 2019, but if current trends persist, the Chrysler and Dodge lineups could indeed slim down.
